Homeopathy for Reflux in Babies: Gentle Ways to Support Your Little One
Spit-up happens. For most babies, reflux is just part of the story while their little digestive systems grow and mature. The muscle between the stomach and esophagus isn’t fully developed yet, so milk comes back up more easily. Most babies who spit up are still happy, feeding well, and gaining weight just fine. In these cases, reflux is more of a laundry problem than a health problem.
But sometimes reflux shows up in ways that are harder on baby (and on mom). This is where homeopathy can be such a beautiful support.
Reflux vs. GERD — knowing the difference
Normal Reflux (GER): Very common in young infants, often peaking around 4 months and improving by 6–12 months. Babies may spit up frequently but are otherwise content and thriving.
GERD: Less common. This is when reflux comes with discomfort, poor weight gain, feeding struggles, or breathing issues. If your baby seems to be in pain or isn’t growing as expected, it’s time to seek help.
When to look a little closer
Most spit-up isn’t a big deal, but there are some signs that deserve extra attention:
Slow weight gain or refusing feeds
Arching of the back in distress
Projectile, green (bilious), or blood-streaked vomit
Trouble breathing, apnea, or recurrent chest infections
Symptoms that don’t improve as your baby grows
When my daughter was little, she had silent reflux which is where stomach contents flow back into the throat and nasal passages without obvious spit-up. She wasn’t gaining weight, she arched in pain, and my instincts told me something wasn’t right. It was hard to get answers, but following my gut and finding the right support made all the difference.
Simple things that can help
Here are a few gentle, low-risk strategies that many parents find useful:
Right-size feeds. Smaller, more frequent feeds can be easier to digest. Paced bottle feeding also slows things down so milk flow doesn’t overwhelm baby.
Keep baby upright. Holding your baby upright for 15–30 minutes after feeding gives milk time to settle.
Breastfeeding tweaks. If you have a strong let-down, feeding on one side at a time or trying a laid-back position can reduce gulping and gas.
Homeopathy: supporting the whole picture
One of the things I love most about homeopathy is that it doesn’t just match a “diagnosis” - it looks at the whole child. The choice of remedy depends on how your baby’s reflux shows up: their temperament, digestion, comfort, and what makes them better or worse.
Remedies often considered for reflux in babies
Natrum phosphoricum – Especially as a tissue salt, this is often thought of for “acidity” - sour spit-up, curdy milk, or sour-smelling stools.
Aethusa cynapium – For babies who can’t tolerate milk. They may vomit curdled milk soon after feeding, then fall asleep exhausted, only to wake hungry again.
Nux vomica – Irritable, restless babies who strain, take frequent small feeds, and have sour regurgitation. Often oversensitive and hard to settle.
Carbo vegetabilis – Bloated, gassy babies who burp a lot and want to be held upright. Often worse lying down.
Lycopodium – Tummy full of gas, noisy rumbling, worse in the evening, sometimes after only a small feed.
Chamomilla – Fussy, inconsolable babies who cry with pain, arch their backs, and only settle when carried. May also have greenish or sour stools, especially with teething.
Getting help
If reflux is mild, your baby may simply grow out of it. But if your little one seems uncomfortable, if your instinct tells you something is off, or if it’s more than a laundry inconvenience, it’s worth getting extra support.
Homeopathy can be a gentle, natural way to help your baby feel more comfortable and to help you feel calmer and more confident too.
